Want the Job Done Right? Rent the Right Tools

A lot of people have big home improvement projects on their wish lists. Maybe you want to build a deck, pressure wash the house exterior, install a retaining wall around the flower garden, build a storage shed for the lawn mower and tools cluttering your garage or finally take care of that backyard drainage problem.

If you've gone so far as to take bids from contractors, you were likely shocked by their quotes, but don't let that stand in the way of getting the job done. Do a little research to find out what's involved in the project, then head on down to your local rental store to find the professional-grade tools you'll need for the job.

On that first visit, tell the person behind the counter what you are trying to accomplish, and he or she will help you figure out what equipment you need to get the job done right, and safely.

For example, the self-propelled post-hole auger you'll find at the rental store to dig the footings for your new deck will be a lot stronger and sturdier than one you'd find for sale at your local home improvement store. Same goes for the walk-behind trencher you'll need to build that retaining wall, and the pressure washer you'll need to clean the driveway. And if you need to do a tile job, it'll save you a lot of time and aggravation if you have a professional-grade saw that makes quick clean cuts, versus the version you picked up at your local home improvement store.
Another benefit of renting tools versus owning them is you don't have to worry about maintenance or storage. These issues come into play especially for the bigger tools like skid steers, excavators and mini-dozers, the types of tools you'd need to complete a backyard drainage project.

But perhaps the biggest advantage in renting tools over buying them is the huge cost savings. Unless you'll be using a tool day after day, it rarely makes sense to invest the amount of money it would cost to buy it.

It is for that very reason that contractors rent a lot of equipment. They pay only for what they need when they need it, they don't have to store or maintain the equipment and they don't have to lay out thousands of dollars and strap themselves, so it frees up cash flow.
