Home Decorating for the New Year

Want to get a jump start on discovering 2007's hottest decorating and paint color trends? Winter is an ideal time to start planning your interior decorating spruce ups. And, one of the easiest and least expensive ways to give a room a new look and feel is with paint.

"The 2007 color forecast contains some extraordinarily vibrant, yet versatile hues," says Donna Schroeder, Dutch Boy Paints color marketing and design specialist. "The depth and range of this year's most popular colors provide extensive options for adding accents to a room, changing themes and styles, or even completely redecorating from scratch."

All of the colors in this year's forecast can be found in Dutch Boy's innovative new Color Simplicity System. In addition to this year's hottest colors, it also contains color themes that categorize several other popular palettes. A trend brochure is also offered that contains the colors design professionals are mixing and matching to form the "in" look. And now you can too!

Based on Dutch Boy's research, the five modern and stylish color themes for 2007 are as follows:

Gone West

The pioneering spirit moves off the runway and creates a new frontier in the home. Equestrian chic and Santa Fe spice complement each other through rustic materials and handmade goods. Dark, rich and warm colors are the strength of this palette. Colors include Cocoa Brown, Mesa Red, Flatland, Allday Long, Bold Edwardian, Loden Wool, Butterscotch Candy and Fountain Blue.

Tea Party

Take a step back and breathe. Make time for tea and enjoy all that is beautiful and proper. Florals, damask and lace marry soft, pretty shades that recall tradition and attention to detail. Colors include Confident Rose, Primative Hedges, Antique White, Nectar, Morrow Bay, Pixley Falls, Twine and Flamingo Pink.

Cruise Control

A palette of retro '70s-, nautically inspired colors. Modern meets vintage for an updated classic feel. The warm golden wood tones are perfectly balanced by traditional navy and red. Colors include Winding Road, Brilliant Impression, Nature's Way, Orange Concentrate, Chanson Bleu, Convivial Red, Herbaceous and Porcelain Sink.

Preppy Pad

Fun, bright and happy characterize the colors of this palette. Prints and fabrics such as herringbone, stripes, seersucker and plaids are a nod to prep-school traditions. Heavy doses of white bring a balance to these bold colors. Colors include Jumpin' Jack Flash, Tulip Petals, Ultra White, Putting Green, Rice Wine, Darlington, Sewing Bee and Rockets.

Eco-Luxe

Green design and attention to the environment bring an increased appreciation of all that is natural. Rich textures and woven fabrics including raffia, cotton, linen and burlap play off nature's motifs and patterns. Organic and neutral colors bring depth and luxury to the palette. Colors include Black, Wildwood Stables, Giant Sequoia, Spruce Hollow, Water Fowel, Timbermine, Woonsocket Bronze and Bulldog.

According to Schroeder, even if you do choose one of this year's more popular color palettes, the first step in understanding the basics of color starts before you even drive to the store to pick out your paint.

"It might seem obvious, but the first thing consumers should do is survey the furniture and decorations they currently have in their homes," says Schroeder. "Most people are surprised to find out that much of their decor is in the same color family because they are naturally attracted to decorating in their favorite colors."

So, if a pre-existing color scheme exists, try designing around it. For example, if the couch, coffee table and end tables all have brown hues, then choose a complementary color such as a taupe or buttery yellow.
