Exterior design tips: choosing vinyl house siding colors

Owning a home by the past several generations typically meant applying a new coat of paint (or two) every few years. A painted veneer was the most common type of exterior home design, even those that were covered with the then-new innovation of aluminum siding a few decades ago.

But in recent years another type of finish has emerged: vinyl siding. Neat, durable, and lasting, this type of house cover is widely available in a range of hues and tints at affordable pricing. But with so many colors to choose from, how do you know which ones to choose? In the past, many wooden home structures were painted white or a pastel shade. But with progress has come increasingly greater variety in the ways that we can decorate our homes, inside and out.

In choosing coordinating colors for your home, here are some things to consider.

1. Don't stand out from other neighborhood homes. Although a unique look may seem desirable, don't do anything rash, such as choosing a hot pink or neon lavender shade of vinyl. Instead, look for ways to fit in with other homes on your block in terms of color scheme and property accents.

2. Consider choosing a tint from a related category. For example, if the homes on either side have neutral-color siding or paint, you may want to likewise choose a neutral shade or one or two a bit lighter or darker. Going several shades further may make your home stand out in a way that is not necessarily positive.

3. Coordinate complementary accents. If your house is sided in gray, you may want to put up black or dark red window shutters as opposed to a lighter color, which would fade your home's overall impression and make it appear ghostly. Or when using off-white siding and sky-blue shutters, why not try a window box with a different shade of blue?

4. Match the porch to your house. A porch or deck with rails can be painted in neutral tones to blend with or provide a contrast to the house's vinyl siding. You may even want to use a natural wood look if it fits with the home's overall design. Avoid sharply contrasting shades to prevent a jarring image for viewers.

5. Coordinate outlying buildings. You may want to use the same shade of vinyl siding for your freestanding garage, shed, barn, dog house, or other outbuildings on the property. Of course this will depend on your budget and the style of these buildings as to whether this is possible.

6. Choose appropriate accents. Use brightly-colored porch pieces like name signs or furniture for neutral shades of vinyl siding that cover your home's exterior. Use more subtle accent pieces for your home's light-colored siding. Overall, avoid trying to blend too many different shades via the siding, outbuildings, porch accoutrements, rails, and accents.

Adorning your home's exterior with vinyl siding is an exciting opportunity to remake its entire image. Check color charts and discuss your ideas with a sales assistant at a home supply store for more details about decorating with vinyl siding.
