Patio and outdoor furniture choosing the best hammock

Purchasing a hammock can be easier than one would originally think. With a little knowledge and a few tips, it is a fairly simple process. There are three main varieties of hammocks. In the following three paragraphs, a description is provided for each.

Rope hammocks are typically thought of as the classic hammock. They are the most durable of the three types. Made of a combination of polypropylene and rope, these hammocks can withstand the elements. Though a rope hammock will not conform to the body, it is comfortable. A note to make is that the closer the weave of the rope, the more comfortable it will be. A rope hammock can be hung from its own stand, between two objects such as two posts, or two trees. Typically, these hammocks will be factory-produced from synthetic fibers.

Fabric hammocks are made of a variety of materials, natural to synthetic. These hammocks will conform to the body, and have often been used in place of beds. Maintenance is fairly simple. While these hammocks don't offer the ventilation that a rope hammock will, certain synthetic fabrics can wick away moisture.

String or Mayan Style Hammocks have been made for thousands of years. Artisans hand weave these hammocks into a web-like design. The end result is an incredibly comfortable hammock that conforms to your body shape while allowing for ventilation. These are usually very lightweight. While this type of hammock is probably the most comfortable, keep in mind that it is very easy to damage.

Now it is time to think of your specific needs. Where do you intend to hang the hammock, and for what purpose? Do you have pets or small children? How much time do you anticipate spending in your hammock?

If you are planning on hanging your hammock outside, you will want to choose something that will withstand the elements, that won't fade or deteriorate over time. A fabric hammock may not be the best choice, as the material is more likely to fade, and if exposed to rain, sun, and wind, over time the fabric will most likely deteriorate. A classic rope hammock can withstand all of those elements and provides plenty of ventilation, and will stand up to a normal amount of abuse. However, while the rope hammock is comfortable, it will leave a "waffle-effect" on the skin. A string hammock allows perfect ventilation and comfort, but is not very durable. If you have kids or pets you will have to be very careful and watchful of their use of the hammock. Because these hammocks are woven in an intricate web, it can easily be pulled and damaged by zippers, keys, and other common sharp objects.

Another thing to consider is what size you will want. Do you want a hammock that will fit just one person or more? Have a price range in mind before you go shopping. As with any product, the well-known name brands will be pricier, but are more likely to last longer and have better warranties. Also, research your particular store's return policy. Follow these guidelines, and you will be the satisfied owner of a hammock that suits the needs of you and your family.
