Buyer's guide: wood vs. metal patio furniture

Whether entertaining friends and family around the patio table or lounging in a comfy chair with cold lemonade and a steamy novel, we want our patio furniture to be comfortable, durable and attractive. By taking a few moments before you buy to learn about the different types of furniture available, you can make an informed decision.

Before buying, shop around to see what different styles of furniture are out there. Check out warranties, read care and cleaning instructions and compare prices, since patio furniture prices can vary quite a bit. Measure the patio to make sure you choose furniture that will fit the space. Think about the image that you would like the furniture to convey. For example, do you want a romantic feel to the patio, or do you prefer a more rustic look?

Some will be attracted to the solid look of wood, while others will fall in love with a metal set. Both materials have pros and cons. While in the past rust was a major problem with metal outdoor furniture, today's furniture often comes with a rust resistant coating, which can add years of life. Wrought iron is strong and has a beautiful old-fashioned look, but is heavy and can be difficult to store. Make certain any wrought iron furniture you purchase is rust resistant. Aluminum is a popular choice because it is lightweight and does not rust.

Wood patio furniture comes in a variety of styles and materials. Wicker has a lovely Victorian look, but is easily ruined by the weather. Wicker holds up best when used in covered areas. Softwoods require regular painting or sealing to protect them from the elements. Cedar, a popular softwood, is insect and decay resistant. Other favorite softwood choices are pine and cypress. Hardwoods are more durable and require less maintenance than softwoods, and of the hardwoods teak is considered the best for outdoor furniture. Other hardwoods commonly used in patio furniture are mahogany, jarrah and redwood.

Once the furniture has been purchased and installed on your patio, keep it looking great with proper care. While one should always follow the manufacturer's instructions for care, there are some general guidelines to follow.

- Finished furniture can be cleaned with a mild detergent and water. After washing, rinse the soap off to prevent buildup, then completely dry the furniture.

- Unless protected with sealant or paint, sometimes several times a year, wood furniture exposed to the elements will turn to a silvery gray color.

- Auto wax can be used to protect the finish of metal furniture that is not textured.
- In winter, furniture should be stored or covered with a tarp. Make sure the furniture is completely dry before covering with a tarp, otherwise mold could form. Even furniture that has been designed to withstand snowy weather, such as teak, will enjoy a longer life if stored in the winter.

With careful selection and maintenance, your patio furniture will enhance your home and provide a comfortable place to enjoy fine weather for years to come.
