Do it yourself: staining a wood privacy fence

A wood privacy fence is an effective way to provide seclusion for your property. It can also identify property lines, and, a fence can help to serve as a wind break during the winter season. A privacy fence can be made out of Spruce, Cedar, Pine or Fir, and they come in different styles and heights.

Because a privacy fence is normally made of wood, though, they need to be stained and protected. Certain woods, such as whitewoods, turn gray over a period of time from being out in the weather, if they are not treated. They can also warp, crack and decay if they are not properly protected.

In order to protect your wood privacy fence, you can either paint it or stain it. You should finish the application, if you choose to stain it, with a good - quality wood sealer. Or, you can purchase a stain that has a sealer combined with it. This way, instead of needing to cover the entire fence with two different products, you will only have to cover it with one.

To stain your privacy fence, you will first need to prepare the wood surface. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the stain container in order to achieve the best results. Make sure that rain is not forecast for the next twenty - four to forty - eight hours. You don't want your freshly - stained fence to get wet. Basically, the surface will need to be thoroughly dry, clean and free from oil, grease, and other pollutants. You can either paint carefully around gate latches and other metal hardware, or, you can use painter's masking tape to mask them off.

The second step is to cover the ground around the bottom of your privacy fence with old newspapers or with drop cloths. This will keep the stain from getting on your grass, your shoes, concrete, et cetera. If your fence is very long, covering the entire length of it at once time would be next to impossible. So, just cover a six foot long area. Then, when you begin this project, stain that area of the fence, then move the newspaper or drop cloth protection as you proceed on.

The third step is to put on your protective eyewear and some latex gloves. Then, you can begin to apply the stain on your wood privacy fence. Make sure that you read and follow the manufacturer's directions on the stain container in order to achieve the best results. A clean, good - quality paint brush will provide the best coverage. Be sure that you apply the stain on the wood in the same direction as the grain. Start at one end of the fence and apply the stain on a small section at a time. Apply the stain in short, even strokes; thin out any heavy spots so it doesn't run.

After you have finished the first side, it's time to move your equipment to the back side of your wood privacy fence. Repeat the staining process until you are completely finished.

Make sure that you stain every wood piece of the entire privacy fence, including the top, sides, ends, et cetera. You should apply a second coat of stain to the wood after the first coat has thoroughly dried. Then, allow the stain on your entire wood privacy fence to dry thoroughly. If you masked off the metal hardware, carefully remove it now.
