Creating a grown up room for a little girl

A "grown up" theme is a unique idea to consider for a little girls room. Such a room would have a sophisticated, timeless atmosphere. It will be less dated than a normal little girl's room, and she will be able to grow into it. Here are some ideas you can use:

Stay away from traditional baby colors. Instead or painting the room in pastel blue, yellow or pink, look for colors older girls are drawn to. Consider denim blue, lavender, peach, coral, purple and deep green as the main color for the room.

Select a theme that a young adult would like instead of something for babies. For instance, decorate the room with ladies hats, and hat motif decor instead of purchasing the decor from the Disney Babies collection. Other grown up themes could be stars and moons, toile, or the beach.

Choose sophisticated fabrics. Instead of pink and white lace cotton bedding and window treatments consider using linen, denim, silk, and twill. Choose patterns such as plaid, stripes, checks, hounds tooth, and toile. Choose fabrics with several colors in them that use intricate patterns for one or two pieces in the room.

Purchase furniture in classic styles. For dressers and other wood furnishings, purchase sturdy pieces from the same stores you would buy your own furniture. For the crib, purchase a model that can transition to a toddler bed, and later a twin or full sized bed. The only child-sized items that should be in the room are a table and chairs as a child could fall from adult versions of these items. Use classic furniture styles like Mission, Shaker, Victorian, or Arts and Crafts.

Do not purchase juvenile accessories for the room. Instead, purchase decor that a young lady would like. Keep in mind however to keep small items that a child could swallow out of reach. Items you can use to decorate the room are strings of artificial pearls, flower broaches, ladies hats and gloves, teacups and saucers, and other adult collectables.

Instead of beanbag and foam chairs for your child's room, purchase upholstered furniture with slipcovers that you can take off and wash when the need arises. Also, have the chair underneath treated with a stain guard product. Of course, a child-sized armchair may be cute in your child's room, but they can better snuggle into an adult sized armchair to read a book or take a nap.

Purchase adult versions of baby items. Instead of receiving blankets, purchase a throw blankets. Have them cut down to size if they are too large for your child. For crib bedding, purchase adult bedding for your child's room and have it cut down to size as well. A full sized comforter can be cut into two crib sized and one twin sized version of the same thing. This will also be a tremendous cost savings to you in the future.

To keep the room from being inundated with toys, store them on shelving systems in baskets. These shelving systems can be installed in the bottom half of your child's, or out in the open. You can also create built in shelves with doors that can be closed when the toys are put away.
