Do it yourself kids theme bedrooms: garden furniture, crafts and decorating

If your child is a budding gardener, creating a garden-themed bedroom may be just the thing to encourage her green thumb adventures. Read on for several fun, garden-themed decorating ideas that she's sure to love.

Floor- Make your child feel like she's stepped outdoors by creating a grassy covering for the floor. Just purchase some green shag carpet remnants, and cut out a few area rugs to scatter throughout the room.

Walls- All it takes is a little blue paint to ensure perfect weather in your child's garden retreat. Paint the walls in an inviting shade of sky blue, and then add a few white clouds to complete the effect. For a bit of whimsy, install a white picket fence along the bottom of the wall, and fill in between the pickets with hand-painted flowers.

Bed- Take a step away from the typical headboard by placing a garden arbor at the head of the bed. The arbor can be decorated with vines of silk flowers to create the illusion that it's outdoors.

Bedding- A plain, white comforter provides the perfect backdrop for a colorful, garden design. Purchase a box of fabric crayons, and then have your child cover the comforter with drawings of flowers, birds and other garden-themed images. Note: The design may need to be heat set before use. Consult the crayon box for complete instruction.)

Dresser- Give a plain dresser a garden theme by stenciling the names of various flowers all over its surface. To complete this project you'll need a letter stencil kit, some stencil adhesive, a paintbrush and some acrylic paint in your choice of colors. Once your supplies are gathered, spray some adhesive on the back of your letters, and apply them to the dresser. Then, just fill in the open areas of the stencil with paint, and allow it to dry before removing the stencil. If you are handy with a brush, you can even go a step further by painting pictures of the named flowers.

Window- Forgo fussy window treatments in favor of a simple vine of silk flowers wrapped around a curtain rod. Then, give the room an unexpected detail by installing a window box under the window, and filling it with live flowers.

Storage- If you're looking for a way to control all of the clutter that seems to find its way to your child's dresser top, solve the problem with flowerpots. Just purchase a few terra-cotta pots, and use them to store pencils, hair accessories and other small items. You can even label the pots to further organize the mess. (Check your local craft store for a specially designed terra cotta marker.)

Laundry basket- Flowerpots can also be used to organize larger messes. To tame your child's laundry pile, just purchase a large, tree-sized flowerpot, and toss all dirty laundry inside. If you'd like to spruce up the flowerpot a bit, purchase a few bottles of Patio Paint, and brush on the design of your choice.

Turn your child's room into a garden hide-a-way, and watch her excitement grow!
