Window treatments ideas

When it comes to choosing window treatments, the options seem endless. You no longer have to settle for blinds and cafe curtains; now there are shutters, shades and simple materials you can drape over your windows.

Your home's style and decor will be the most important factor in choosing window treatments. Today, the most common window covering is the mini-blind. These blinds are available in many colors and materials and range in price from inexpensive to very costly. While mini-blinds give a tailored look to your windows, they also collect dust and are clumsy to clean. Also, if working with a tape measure is not your strong point, you may want to choose another method for covering and decorating your windows. Mini-blinds are sold in specific sizes and if you do not measure your window opening properly, the blinds will not fit.

Another option is the window shade - and not the plain white shades of past generations. Today's window shades are chic and stylish and although these, too, require window frame measurements, they can be adjusted if your measurements are slightly off. They are easy to clean, whether on the window with a spray cleaner, or taken down and soaked in the sink.

If you want a more formal look for your windows, perhaps in your dining room, the new balloon curtains are an excellent alternative. They come in a variety of fabrics and lace and are relatively inexpensive.

For larger windows you might try shopping in the bedding department. Satin, eyelet or flannel sheets look as nice on a window as they do on a bed, and being a seamstress is not necessary. Just invest in a decorative curtain rod, available in brass, wood and assorted colors. Drape the sheet over the rod to give your room a rich, elegant look.

Shutters are a nice choice for a country kitchen. They look warm and inviting and are easy to care for, but again, be sure of your measurements before purchasing them. If hung properly, they add a custom look to any room.

To dress up your existing window treatments, add bows, ribbons or dried flowers available at your local craft store. Just sprucing up your present window treatments can add a whole new look to a room.

Decorating your windows can be easy and inexpensive - all it takes is a little know-how and a lot of ingenuity!
