The Evolution of the Kitchen Triangle

The work triangle is the basis on which all kitchen layouts are designed. It is the imaginary line drawn from each of the main work stations in your kitchen...the sink, the refrigerator and your stove, or cooktop. It shows the distance and the traffic pattern needed between focal points for efficient cooking. When it is planned properly, food preparation is a breeze.

It isn't quite as simple as that anymore. In most newer kitchens you now have, dishwashers, trash compactors, microwave ovens, garbage disposals, and numerous other small appliances. You need to be careful how you group them.

Your refrigerator, pantry, lazy susan, spice rack, wine rack, roll out trays, etc., all belong in the food storage area. That is your first work station.

The second station is your preparation and cooking station. Counter space is very important in this area. In addition to your stovetop, oven and microwave, you need several small appliances, such as a food processor, blender, electric mixer, electric can opener, toaster, or bread maker. You can't work with all that clutter, so store most or all of these small items in a cabinet in this second work station.

Station number three is the cleanup station. Your sinks, garbage disposal, dishwasher, trash compactor, or roll-out trash basket belongs here.

Make sure you allow for counter space next to your refrigerator for setting down items as you take them out. The same goes for next to your oven. You need a convenient counter to set hot pans down on.

With a setup like this, you are going to love working in your kitchen!
