How to Plan a Basement Design

The first thing you need to consider when planning on a functional basement for your house is to think of a good basement design concept. A design plan will steer you to the right direction as you actualize your ideas. The challenge is to know HOW to create a good basement design. What makes a good design? What research must be done?

First of all, you need to focus on natural light. Find any means to add a link to the outdoors. If your house has walk-out pathways, ask your contractor if the construction will support new sliders or French doors. You may then focus on artificial lighting to further brighten or add drama to the space. You should strategically position artificial lighting where you need it the most, such as at the corners of the room. You have many options here. You could include recessed can fixtures, sconces and hanging lights to maximize the space.

Next, try to incorporate a basement design that go with the rest of your home to develop a seamless transition. For instance, you could use the same color palette in your basement with the one dominating your entire house. Use similar hardware such as door knobs, drawer handles, hinges, and so on.

Now let's talk about flooring. You need to design wisely here. If you are located in an area where flooding usually occurs or is most likely to occur (such as areas near the sea), then you need to consider a type of flooring that can be easily maintained and fixed in case a flood happens.

Now what other accessories and accents should you use? Add personality to the space by having an accent wall of a color that stands out from the rest. Paint vertical lines on a wall or all walls if you want to visually add height to a low-ceiling basement.

The final consideration to make pertaining to basement design is the overall function of your basement. Don't over-specialize-if there's a possibility you'll be selling your home in the near future, consider other people's preferences. Ascertain that any custom feature you've employed can be easily reused or reconstructed for other means.
