How to Give Your Bedroom the Designer Look

It's too easy to neglect your bedroom while you work on making the more public parts of your home look great. Too often bedrooms are used as dumping grounds for clean laundry before it's put away and stuff you don't know what to do with when guests are coming round. But it's time to make your sleeping room a sanctuary and the haven of peace and quiet you deserve.

1. Clear the Clutter from Your Bedroom

Tidy your room and clear everything out of there that is not meant to be in a bedroom. Find places elsewhere in your home so that it doesn't find its way back. Too much stuff? Get rid of some things that you don't use or love to make way for things that you do.

2. Measure the Room

Measure the major areas of the room and the large items of furniture which you don't want to lose and plan them out on graph paper. Do you have too much furniture? A designer bedroom is not cramped - it depends on plenty of space. Consider selling some furniture or giving it away.

3. Make a Shopping List

Consider which items you will replace and which items you will add depending on your budget. Think particularly about furniture, floor coverings, bedding and lighting. You will probably need to replace and add quite a bit if you want the designer look unless you are part of the way there already. If you're not sure keep some items in reserve to see if you can use them in your new scheme.

4. Select a Color Scheme

This is where you make or break your room scheme. The easiest way to pick a color scheme is to choose a fabric pattern you love for the bedding and use 3 colors from the pattern for other items in the room. Choose a light colors for walls, slightly darker for flooring and so on.

Step 5. Put It all Together

Once you have chosen your colors, go shopping to find the paint, carpets, rugs, bedding, curtains and so on you require. Don't make final decisions or purchase everything until you have an idea you can get the colors you need to make up your scheme for each item. Once you are happy you can pull your "look" together make your final selection and purchase.

Step 6. Add the Finishing Touches

Once your basic room is complete with paint, furniture, bedding, curtains and so on, it's time to make it really special. Give your room designer finishing touches with pictures on the walls, a beautiful vase of fresh flowers and gorgeous plump cushions on your bed in accent shades. Pick a dark or bright color from your bedding fabric for accessories to give a room some points of interest while staying coordinated.
