How to Decorate a Small Room On a Tight Budget

A small room can be very challenging when it comes to decorating. While many people use visual tricks to make the room appear larger, it is sometime advantageous to just appreciate the room as it is amd maximize it's appeal and function. This is an 8' x 10' bedroom that was converted to a livingroom. Colors used are rich and vibrant, making the room an intimate space for entertaining or just watching TV!

Step 1

Decide on a style or theme and color family. I tend to avoid stark contrast in tone and color to provide rest for the eyes. Choose a warm(reds, oranges, yellows) or cool (blues, violets, greens) pallet. You don't need a specific theme to be inspired by the feeling. A room inspired by the seaside doesn't require fishing nets and stuffed fish on the wall! Pastel walls and gossamer white curtains will feel light and breezy.

Step 2

Select paint colors. If there are particular colors that make you feel calm, sexy, happy, inspired, etc., go with them. Gather inspiration from your favorite places and things. If you are having trouble selecting colors, look at some books, magazines, or internet sites to find combinations that you love. Don't be shy. This is your artwork, a refection of you. Paint the walls and trim in coordinating colors. I selected deep tangerine color (one gallon) for the walls and cranberry red (one quart)for the trim. Total paint cose was less than 20 dollars.

Step 3

More on paint colors: If you want to paint your walls the color of a yellow hibiscus growing by your font door, bring home a handful of yellow paint chips (color samples on little cards) and compare them, side-to-side, with your flower. It is even easier if you use a paper punch to make a little hole in the paint chip and place it over the flower to get an exact match!

Step 4

To control costs, choose your furniture and accessories very thoughtfully. The sofa in the above photo is a hand-me-down. While the lamps do not match, they work well together. Matching $1 bandanas cover the plant stand and barstool, used as little tables for the lamps. Before you spend money on a new coffee table, look around for ANYTHING that would suit your needs. A fresh coat of paint on an old toy box may just work perfectly. This was a battered and discarded vanity mirror. With some trim paint and a little gold acrylic (88 cents at the craft store), this mirror was a perfect adornment to my room.

Step 5

Treat your room as your own artwork...a reflection of your personal style. Make it a place that makes you feel GOOD! Display a favorite collection. Paint a picture on the wall. Be proud of the fact that many of your treasures were spared the indignity of laying to waste in a landfill.
