How to Choose a Sofa Bed Mattress Pad

Tired of hearing about that lumpy, uncomfortable sofa bed every time you have guests? Transform it with a sofa bed mattress pad! This type of bed may start out to be comfortable when it is new. But over time, it will begin to lose its firmness and cushioning, and become downright uncomfortable. With just a small expenditure, you can make yours so comfortable that there is a chance your guests may not want to leave!

Look for a mattress pad with extra padding. The reason for this has a lot to do with the way sofa beds are made. Most of them have a steel structure, which is not the most comfortable thing in the world to lie on. Typically running down the middle is a steel bar. Imagine lying on that for a night, and you'll find it easy to see why your guests are not too thrilled when you offer the use of yours!

Pillow-Top

A thick, quilted mattress pad, commonly called a pillow-top because of its cushioning and softness, is the perfect solution for an uncomfortable sofa bed. Made of high quality foam, it can help ensure anyone who is lucky enough to sleep on it will get a great night's sleep, and wake up the next morning refreshed and happy.

The thick foam is noted for relieving the pain from pressure points, which the steel frame seems to make worse. No one who sleeps on it will have to worry about being awakened in the middle of the night with aching shoulders or hips, or tingling and numb arms and hands caused by a lumpy mattress.

A good pad will have elastic at its four corners. What this does is help to hold the it onto the mattress. This is necessary when folding the bed after you wake up, as any twisting and turning of the mattress pad could cause the sofa itself to buckle. These straps also help to keep it from slipping off the usually thin mattress as the sleeping person shifts positions.

Foam Density

You can usually find sofa bed mattress pads at any store that sells good quality sheets, comforters, and other linens. Do check the density of the foam that is contained in the one you buy, if possible. A density of around 4 pounds per cubic foot is a good standard to shoot for. Look for extra foam running down the middle, as this is a problem area on every sofa bed, and can cause a lot of discomfort.

Also see if one with a machine washable cover in a color that suits your decor is available. You should be able to find what you need in either a Full or Queen size, as these are the usual sizes that they are manufactured in.

The right sofa bed mattress pad will make your sofa just as comfortable as a regular bed. Those who sleep over during a visit to your home will thank you for it the morning after!
