How to Choose a Baby Nursery Theme

Designing your baby's nursery around a theme is a great way to create a unified look. If you have decided to incorporate a nursery theme but are still looking for the perfect choice, keep reading to learn about some of the most popular and interesting nursery theme ideas.

First, decide whether you would like a gender specific or a gender neutral nursery theme. While many nursery themes are gender neutral such as Moon & Stars, Sea World, Clouds & Sky themes, there are others which are definitely gender specific. Princess or Ballerina nursery themes are perfect for baby girls while Firemen or Pilot nursery themes are popular for baby boys. Many parents choose to not know the gender of the baby so a gender neutral theme will be their option.

Then, do some research on the variety of nursery themes available. Often, nursery themes are categorized in relevant groups to help you navigate through the process of narrowing down your choice. You can expect to see nature-inspired nursery themes - Clouds & Sky, Moon & Stars, Four Seasons, and Sea & Nautical themes are popular within this category. There are nursery themes featuring famous characters from well-know books and songs - Princess, Fairies, Teddy Bears, and Peter Rabbit & Friends are good examples. The floral nursery themes (Garden, Daisies, etc.) and the nursery themes featuring animals (Farm Animals, Jungle & Safari Animals, Frogs, etc.) are among the most popular choices. The activities & sports nursery themes category includes popular choices such as Pilot, Firemen, Ballerina and Musician themes, as well as more unique options such as a Books & Writing nursery theme. Finally, there are baby themes which feature famous design patterns, shapes, letters and numbers.

With the above in mind, the next step is to try and narrow you choice to a few options. As you make your choice, consider the overall color scheme and whether the theme will be able to grow with your child. Soft pastel colors are popular but think of adding an accent color, as well, for a fresher look. If possible, choose a nursery theme which will be able to grow with your baby. In this way, you will have the flexibility to add new accessories and items without having to redecorate the whole room once your little one outgrows the baby age stuff. A general sports theme, for example, gives you a much greater flexibility as compared to a nursery theme featuring a specific sport.

Finally, think about how you want to incorporate the theme elements in your room - decide on your focal point and the specific objects (night lamp, wall art, bedding) which will feature the theme elements. Armed with your ideas, browse through your favorite baby magazines, blogs and online boutiques to see if you find products that carry your theme and which you would love to have in your nursery. Often, your inspiration will come from a specific pattern or color, so take your time to look through the wealth of resources available. It is very possible that you would find a crib bedding set with the perfect pattern or a beautiful art piece which will inspire the rest of the room.

Remember, if you like, you could always incorporate elements from a few themes or you could design your nursery around a color choice; There are are no rules as long as the design works for you and your little one.
