How to Buy Window Valances

Topping a window with a valance can add warmth and style to any room. Do your homework before purchasing a valance, and you will have an easier time finding something that works with your decor.

Step1. Measure the width of each window. Add four to six inches to each measurement so that the valance will extend two to three inches on either side of the window.

Step2.Write the measurements down on a small piece of paper, and keep the paper in your wallet or purse. Keep a color sample with the measurements so that both are ready for any unexpected finds.

Step3.Choose a color that complements the decor of the room. Pull colors from furniture, pillows and other accessories in the room. Keep several color swatches with the measurements.

Step4.Look for private label valances to save costs. Purchase private labels from well established vendors because the company is required to provide all warranty services.

Step5.Purchase custom window valances when you cannot find what you are looking for from retailers. Meet with a representative at your home to decide the style and color choice for your custom valance.

Step6.Purchase hardware for hanging the valances. Use the window measurements to determine the correct length for the rod. Add the additional four to six inches to achieve the correct length.

Step7.Purchase a valance that is lined. The lining protects the valance from sun damage and fading.
