How to Arrange Living Room Furniture

The living room is the center of attraction of your home. Most of the time your bedroom or kitchen goes unnoticed by the guests but a living room can never. So keeping it tidy and best is something you always focus on. Also, the living room will instantly create an image of how your entire house is. With many things to be considered in your living room, the basic thing is how to arrange living room furniture. Arranging living room furniture in the right way is essential to give it the best look. Here's how to arrange living room furniture.

How to Arrange Furniture in Living Room

Consider the Space Available
Before we look at various options you have, to arrange furniture in living room, the main factor is the space available. The arrangement will highly depend on the free area you have in this room. Consider this; your living room basically consists of a TV set. If its a wall mount, no floor space is invested. Next, it might have some cabinets, now even if they are wall mounted or placed on floor you need to reduce that space. Only if the wall mounted cabinets are above your head level, so that you can stand comfortably below it, you can consider the floor space below it for placing a piece of furniture.

What's the Focal Point
Deciding the focal point is a must while you arrange living room furniture. Most probably the focal point is an entertainment center. Apart from this, it can be a warm fireplace. In this case the fireplace mantel essentially needs to be designed perfectly. If your living room has one or two glass walls or huge glass windows, that give a view of a wonderful landscape or your garden then this can be the best and unique focal point of your living space. Now that you have decided the focal point you have to just arrange the furniture around this focal point. The basic thing while doing living room furniture layout is that no sofa or chair must be placed against this focal point. Arrange the furniture around this, in a way to complete a square including this focal point.

Against or Away from the Walls
There are two basic ways to arrange living room furniture, against the wall or away from the wall. While you are placing furniture in small places, you will have to place it touching the walls. For open spaces, most popular these days, you have to arrange it away from the walls. Remember that while you arrange living room furniture, it should not block the traffic or make moving around uncomfortable.

For Small Spaces

In case of small places, you will have less area to arrange furniture after placing the necessary cabinets and entertainment center. If a flat screen television fits in your budget, it's a great way to save space. One of the living room furniture arrangement ideas is to place the longest sofa right opposite the focal point. So that those people sitting on this, directly face the focal point. Next place other pieces on its either sides, so that they are perpendicular to it and the focal point. You can place the center table as well. If space available doesn't allow for this, opt for small side tables and place each between two pieces of furniture. Opting for delicate designer wrought iron furniture is best to avoid a blocking effect. This furniture is large and comfy, but unlike the leather couch and chairs its base is open and has thin rods which give a spacious look.

For Open Spaces

For open or large areas, you have a lot of options while you arrange living room furniture. Many homes do not have a partition between a dining area and living area, so you can create a boundary with the right living room furniture arrangement. An 'L' shaped sofa is a best piece for such areas. In cases where the kitchen or dining is in same area, place the largest piece opposite it, so that the people sitting on this will have their back towards the dining area. Also, have an elegant rug placed in center of the furniture arrangement. The area between the dining area and living room can have a rug and a huge center piece. You can also place tall showpieces on either sides of the largest sofa. For 'L' shaped sofa, pair it with a single sitter couch. The ones with back are suitable for living room that is common with dining or kitchen. For large living rooms with wall boundaries on at least three sides you can place the backless couch. A 'C' shaped couch with one side smaller in length is also a great piece. Place a center table between the two arms.
