Decorating and Coordinating Your Child's Bedroom

Decorating & Coordinating Your Child's Bedroom

You've chosen your color scheme or theme for your child's bedroom, but you haven't the slightest idea of where to start! Our room decor tips will help you put together a stunning masterpiece of a bedroom that will be wonderfully coordinated.

Most color schemes, and even themes, involve one to three colors, although they can certainly include touches of other colors. The easiest place to start is with an object or accessory that ties your color scheme together. This could be a lamp, a painting, or even bedding. It's important that something in the room involve all or most of the colors you want to incorporate.

You can certainly paint your walls, choose your carpet, and hang your curtains first, but it may be more difficult in the long run. Of course, if these are already finished, we would be happy to customize as closely as possible to what you already have.

For our example, we'll use a Parisian chic color scheme, usually pink, white, and black. For our unifying piece, we would use our Pink Poodle Children's Wall Art, which has a tasteful blend of black, white, and several shades of pink polka dots. Since we would most likely use a lighter wall color, we would frame the wall art in deep brown or black to draw the eye in to the design.

Once you have your unifying piece, you then begin tying the rest of the room together. If your carpet has not already been chosen or installed, you can compare carpet samples to the unifying piece for color match. If your carpet already has been installed and doesn't quite fit, consider a rug that fits with your scheme. Decorative rugs are also wonderful choices for tiled or hardwood floors.

Going with our Parisian chic example, we could choose a neutral carpet, then a black and pink decorative rug for accent. White carpet is an appropriate choice for older children that will not ruin it. Lighter colored carpets, such as a pale pink, will lend to making the room look larger, brighter, and airy.

Your next step is to choose the paint for your walls. Paint swatches are free at your local hardware or paint store. Bring home some samples and compare to your unifying piece and carpet to see what coordinates the best.

First, hold the paint swatch up to middle of the the wall and imagine what it will look like painted.

Then, hold the paint swatch up to the very bottom of the wall where it meets the floor and compare. If your carpet has not been installed yet, but has been chosen, hold it up to the actual carpet. (You can also choose the carpet after you have chosen your wall colors.)

A popular trend is to use more than one color for your walls in tasteful expressions of interior decorating. But if you are using only one color, avoid using dark colors that might shrink the look of the room. Examples of what we might do for Parisian chic:

Paint the walls white, with a black stripe horizontally across chair rail level. Paint the wall below the black stripe in pink vertical stripes or dots.

Paint the walls a pale pink that coordinates with the shades in the painting. We would not use the same shade as the carpet, but a shade or two lighter. We could also go a shade darker, but this may lend to too dark of a look. If we chose white carpet with accent rugs, we would most likely go with a pale pink, or the above option.

Choosing curtains can be done at any step in this process, as long as it coordinates with everything else. Parisian chic curtains could be pure black, when there is not a lot of other black used in the room. They could also be a white material with pink polka dots, to coordinate with our Pink Poodle painting. The possibilities for curtains are endless, probably the least difficult part of the decorating process.

Once your walls, carpet, and curtains are in place, the last and most fun step is to accessorize! Lamps, pillow shams, and other bedding will really make your decor beautiful and unified. Switch covers, doorknobs, drawer pulls, wall letters, bulletin boards, tassels (as drapery tie backs or ceiling fan strings), and picture frames are all items that can be hand painted to match your decor. Tying together a bedroom with these types of accessories will delight your child.

After all, it's the little things that will make or break a room, setting it apart for a truly unique look. We would be delighted to help you put together the perfect room decor.
