Pretty much any room that isn't a perfect square or rectangle is considered "unusual". These oddly-shaped spaces can add a great deal of interest to your home more so if they are decorated with a certain amount of thought and care. Here are some factors to take into consideration when designing the decor for your unusual shaped room:
- Divide the space into individual "rooms" if the dimensions allow. Each area should contain the elements needed to perform the function for which it was intended. For example, a large oddly-shaped kitchen could be divided up with an eating area and the food prep area as well as a stud or work area.
- Soften any harsh angles in the room. Place round furnishings in corners or place a plant that distracts the eye from the sharp angles.
- If the room is very asymmetrical, make sure you dress elements that repeat exactly the same. Window coverings should be identical. Doors should be the same color and use the same molding scheme, even if they are different sizes.
- Use an appropriate area rug in the center of the room. This will bring the eye to the middle of the space rather than focusing on the uneven edges.
- Made very odd corners appear purposeful. Often ignoring the most challenging part of the room can destroy its overall appeal. Consider making the corner a reading nook or artist area so it appears as if it was built specifically for that purpose.
- Use free standing furnishings to help balance the room. By using shelving and cabinetry that is not permanently attached to the wall you are free to place it as needed to keep the room as symmetrical as possible.
- Highlight the odd walls. Often trying to camouflage the unusual shape will actually make the room more awkward. Paint the "strange" wall(s) a different color from the others or even consider painting a mural or making it a display wall for art or photos.
