Everyone loves the living room. It is the perfect "everything" room. Unlike the dining room, kitchen, or bedroom, it does not have a specific purpose with specific furniture such as dining room tables or kitchen islands. Just as its name implies, you simply need to "be" while in this room; you do not need to dine, sleep, or cook unless you want to! Therefore, since there is not a specific action that one must partake in while in the living room, you have free rein to decorate it whichever way you like.
The traditional living room has a couch, a few chairs, a coffee table, a living room buffet, and a few wall decorations. Most people do decide to go this route, but your room can still look unique. The type of furniture you chose is completely up to you! You can integrate these same elements but make them look very different depending on the arrangement and the style of furniture you purchase. One important note: as much as you want to impress your friends by designing the uber-modern living room, if the style is not you, then everything will look and feel terrible. You need to design something in which you feel the most comfortable; since you are the person that needs to see it the most often, you have to like it!
First, you need to assess the size of your living room and decide for what purpose you want the room to be used most. Are you someone who loves to throw parties? If yes, you might want to add a home bar table set in the corner to store wine, glasses, and other alcohol. Would you prefer to make it the entertainment room? If yes, then you need to install an entertainment center with a large television, a DVD player, and a great music sound system. Now that you know what you need, it is time to go out and find it!
Go window-shopping through several stores to get a good idea of what options are available today. Peruse furniture stores, internet sites, and catalogues. Nothing is worse then settling for a couch that is not quite right and finding the perfect one only two weeks later. As long as you are very thorough in your research, you can rest assured that you found the best item out there.
In order to finish off the look of the room, consider a living room buffet along one wall or near a corner. Place framed photos or a vase filled with fresh flowers there in order to add some color!
