When you hear the words "kitchen makeover," you likely see dollar signs all over the place and quickly change the subject. While it's true that a full kitchen renovation can cost a lot of money, you can still get a great new look for your kitchen without breaking the bank. To do it, rather than thinking you need to rip out all of the cabinetry and buy all new flooring and major appliances to make a change, set your sights a little lower (in price, that is) and make some smaller adjustments to freshen up your kitchen's look instead.
To make the most difference with the least amount of money, focus on the larger components of the room. Aside from your appliances, your kitchen cabinets are likely the biggest focal point of the room, and fortunately for you, they are also one of the easier things in a kitchen to update for less. Since they take up so much space in your kitchen, giving them an update in the looks department can completely transform the room. Simply refinishing the wood or giving them all a new coat of paint will have a huge impact - imagine how different your kitchen would look if you were to stain your current light-colored oak cabinets a dark cherry, or if you were to paint your dark-colored cabinets with a bright white high-gloss paint. The difference would be huge, almost like having all new cabinetry for the much lower cost of a couple of cans of paint or stain!
Once you have given your cabinets that new paint or stain, do not neglect to finish things off with some great new hardware. Kitchen cabinet hardware comes in tons of different styles, materials and finishes, so you can really have fun picking out drawer pulls and cabinet pulls to tie the new look together and give it the perfect finishing touch. In fact, you can make a big change in your kitchen cabinetry without doing the paint or stain and just changing your kitchen cabinet handles. You'd be surprised at the big difference such a seemingly small thing can make, and it's even less expensive for you.
So the next time you hear the words "kitchen" and "makeover" in the same sentence, you do not need to run the other way - just remember that you can give the room a big update inexpensively, just by doing simple things like painting your cabinetry and changing out the hardware.
