4 Simple Tips For Cleaning Spa Hot Tub Water

Cleaning spa hot tub water is essential whether you have a home spa or a commercial spa/hot tub. A home spa is where your family will spend a lot of time, where you will relax after a hard day, a place where anyone can find relief from headaches and joint pains and stress. Dirty hot tub water can make you ill and pose a major health problem.

If you own a hot tub, or a hotel/resort/inn that has a spa, you need to take care that the spa water is clean. The slightest negligence can lead to lawsuits, penalties, cancellation of licenses and permits, and additional health inspections. Keeping spa water clean is easy if you follow a few simple rules regularly.

1 - Prevention is better than cure
Don't wait for the water to get dirty before you act. You can install additional filters and covers to make sure that dirt and debris don't find their way into the spa water. If you put a filter into the hosepipe, it can stop the larger debris from entering the spa.

2 - Filter maintenance is important
Cleaning the filter regularly is crucial if you want the spa water quality to be of prescribed standards. Use chemicals that can clean filters without damaging them. Hard water can cause tough-to-remove deposits of minerals on the filters. Use only recommended filter cleaners to remove these deposits. Change filters frequently - according to some estimates, filters in a commercial spa have a lifespan of around 10 months.

3 - Maintain the right pH

Water is theoretically supposed to have a neutral pH of 7, but pollution and factors such as proximity to mines and mineral deposits can alter their state to acidity/alkalinity. Your hot tub water should have a pH of 7.2-7.6. This discourages growth of algae. Use chemicals containing chlorine or potassium to maintain pH levels.

4 - Rinse out all chemicals thoroughly after cleaning

If dirty water is a health hazard, so is water with high concentration of chemical left after your clean-up operation. Before making the hot tubs ready for a dip, rinse out the chemicals well. Do this by flushing water through them a few times.
